This year, I went overboard….
In the past I have used stash yarn for my Summer Sock camp socks, with the exception of what I purchased to knit as Christmas gifts. But this year….I went WAY overboard with new yarn. Like I said in my general summer knitting plans post, the logo theme for SSC24 was 80s/90s, and while this was not a theme theme for the entire KAL, I embraced it and went full on 80s/90s/synthwave.
For those of you who may be unfamiliar with synthwave, it is, according to Wikipedia, ‘an electronic music microgenre that is based predominantly on the music associated with action, science-fiction, and horror film soundtracks of the 1980s. Other influences are drawn from the decade’s art and video games. Synthwave musicians often espouse nostalgia for 1980s culture and attempt to capture the era’s atmosphere and celebrate it.’
Here are so example images of the synthwave aesthetic that I drew my inspiration from:

Ok, who doesn’t want a sock drawer filled with socks in that color theme???!! So yeah….I made some bad choices and bought a lot of yarn I shouldn’t have. Luckily my amazing friend Tedra told me that it will all be knit eventually, I am going to be getting hours and hours of pure happiness from knitting (which is my main hobby), and I am going to end up with socks that I am going to use for years and years to come! Thanks Tedra for enabling me!! ❤ 🙂
While most of the yarn I bought is synthwave inspired, some of it is also inspired simply by the colors and objects I grew up with in my childhood of the late 80’s and 90’s. Come on! Childhood nostalgic items are the BEST!

These were the first two yarns I bought: Back to the 80’s and Caboodle from Cashmere and Coconuts. What 90’s girl wasn’t obsessed with caboodles?? Fun fact: to this day I keep a little mirror in that exact pink and teal shade that I got as a kid with my first caboodle in my current make up case.

These three, Typhoon Lagoon, Moonlit Meadow, and DunQueen are all from Summer Camp Fibers. These yarns all reminded me so much of the pictures I shared above, so I think you can see what inspired me to get them 🙂

These two are from Rainbows and Sprinkles Yarn. The one on the left is called Enchanted Meadow and the one on the right is called Pink Sapphire. I feel like I wore a lot of nylon track jackets and wind breakers in the 90s. I especially remember a nylon track suit in that ubiquitous 90’s teal color. This color made me think of those jackets. Pink Sapphire is a soft synthwave color to me!

This is Spotlight, from DyeonYarns. I am 90% sure I had a windbreaker in these EXACT shades in middle school lol

Neon Pink and Teal, from YouKnitIDye. More synthwave colors!

This color from Floof Fibre is actually called Synthwave. How could I not?!?

This colorway is Candy Land, from Always Be Kind Yarns. Always Be Kind Yarns holds a really special place in my heart due to the fact that my family has been touched multiple times by the same tragedy as Laura’s. It was so exciting to see this colorway from her! CandyLand was my most absolute favorite game as a kid! I am so excited to knit this one up!

My final colorway for Summer Sock Camp 2024 is another one from Always Be Kind Yarns. This is called Neon Electric Rainbow Watercolors. Rainbows to me just scream the 90’s 🙂
So there you have it…. my insane amount of yarn for #SSC2024 that will not actually all even be touched during Summer Sock Camp. TWELEVE SKEINS!!!!!!! Yeah, that was a very poor decision. My excitement always gets away from me…. But I will knit it all eventually and will have so much joy from all the nostalgia that will come with it!
Are you participating in Summer Sock Camp? Let me know! I would also love to see what yarns you are using for SSC!
Until next time,
-Alison
